Purpose of Small Groups
| Meeting our District Priority to encourage new work in the under 40's
LINCOLN AND GRIMSBY DISTRICT OF THE METHODIST CHURCH
Encouraging ‘fresh expression' groups to support those in the age range 18-40.
Purpose of groups:
To nurture a sense of belonging before belief.
Encourage fellowship through meals.
To encourage a link between belief and behaviour (i.e. discipleship)
Retaining a sense of connexion and oversight by the Church:
The Leader of the group must report to the Church Council.
Inclusively:
Consider extending invitations to people of other Churches, denominations and those who have no connection with Church at all.
Guidelines on meeting
Be cringe free:
If you would not do this in front of a stranger, don't do it in a small group!
Beware of how the culture of Church can inhibit people – e.g. open prayer.
Be real:
Help the activity continue through the week – i.e. agree on a number of things you
will do – its up to you but you may wish to consider:
Praying for each other during the week, at the same time each day.
Ensuring that something ‘accessible' (eg the local and national news) forms the basis for your discussions.
Cultivate a supportive atmosphere where people feel confident to share.
Be open:
Incorporate socials on a regular basis, drawing on everyday activities – e.g. films/bowling.
Do not let the group become insular – invite new people on a regular basis, and expect the need to develop new groups.
GOD IS WITH US.
