Inserting an Element into PowerPoint

How you can change the transitions or timings of a slide show.
This is used to match the slide show timings to the length of a musical number.
This tutorial can be used with the Slide Shows provided on this website.
The graphics in this tutorial were created using PowerPoint 2000.
The concepts will work using any version of PowerPoint.

STEP 1.
Open the slide show you wish to change.

Determine the length of your song in seconds.
(4:35 = 275 seconds)

Divide the length of the song by the number of slides.
(275 / 30 = 9.17)

By default, the time is set at 10 - 14 seconds per slide.

STEP 2.
From the Insert drop down choose Picture

STEP 3.
Once the Slide Transition window appears, change the number below Automatically After to the number of seconds you desire.
In our example (in step 1), the number was 9.17 seconds, making the whole number 9.
So change the default time from 00:10 to 00:09.

STEP 4.
Clicking on the indicated down arrow will display a list of transitions. Choose a transition from this drop down list.

A few transitions are not suitable for this type of slide show (i.e. cover and uncover).

STEP 5.
Once you have set the Slide Timing and Transition, click on the Apply to All button.
This will change all the slides in a presentation to the same time length and transition type.

STEP 6.
To prevent the slide show from looping back to the first image, you will need to add extra time to the last slide.

A Highlight the last slide in the slide show.

B Change the slide timing to 01:00 in the slide transition window.

C Click on the Apply button to set the last slide to one minute.
The step above will make the last slide appear on screen for about 14 seconds if the song was 4:35 in length.
To spread this time out over a few slides, click on option.

STEP 7.
You can change the last slide to appear to match the timings of the previous slides. Calculate the extra seconds. We set 9 seconds per slide (9 x 30 slides = 270). The song was 275 seconds and the remaining time would be 5 seconds (275 minus 270).

A Click on the Slide Sorter button - it is easier to change slides in this view.

B Changing the last 5 slides to 10 seconds would end the slide show at exactly 4:35 (the song length).
By right clicking on a slide, you can quickly get to the slide transition popup window.

C You should change the last slide to 01:00 to prevent the slideshow from looping.
This will ensure that you have enough time to stop the slide show before it begins looping.
