THE LINCOLN & GRIMSBY DISTRICT SEPTEMBER 2009 SYNOD REPORT FOR the website
Synod met in Trinity Church, Immingham, which is undergoing extensive refurbishment.. The Superintendent Minister of the Grimsby and Cleethorpes Circuit, Rev. Michael Townsend, led opening worship.
The Chair of District, Rev. Dr David Perry, presided over Synod and led closing worship.
The usual business matters were dealt with, representatives elected to Conference and Youth Assembly, district officers appointed, reports received.
In the first part of our proceedings we heard about what is happening within the district in the way of training, activities and initiatives.
Among the training opportunities were Safeguarding, Local Preaching (where a new style course is being piloted), prayer in worship, ‘Handling Tricky Situations’ for Self-Appraiser and Accompanists, as well as days for ministers focussed on creativity and reflection and supervision skills.
How can we get involved? Contact Ms Jane Measures the District Training Officer. Jane is also looking to find people within the district who are themselves involved in training and could offer their gifts to the church.
The next stages of the Reshaping for Mission process were outlined, involving materials to understand what it means to people in local churches and circuits. Then Circuit Mission Strategies need to be developed.
What needs to happen? Materials are available for those who want guidelines for how to develop these Circuit Mission Strategies. The documents need to come to Rev. Liz Childs by September 2010, so that gaps within our mission are identified.
Extending Discipleship, Exploring Vocation (EDEV) was outlined, it being a resource to help with discernment of our call and discipleship, and possibly a pathway towards candidating. It involves a course of our own choice, perhaps Disciple or Mission Shaped Ministry.
How can we get involved? Contact Rev. Sara Cliff if you want to follow a course, and Sara is also looking to find facilitators and mentors for those discerning their call.
As part of the information for this district, the new Development Manager for Epworth Old Rectory, Rev. Claire Potter, spoke of the many exciting developments planned to restore the Rectory to be like it was at the time when the Wesleys lived there. There will be changing exhibitions and a Visitors’ Centre.
What can we do? Visit this year when its 300th anniversary is being celebrated. Visit later when the renovations are underway or even complete. Contact Claire for information.
Secondly we heard about connexional and world matters from Conference 2009. Our representatives attempted to cover the keynote speeches by the President and Secretary of Conference and the major debates and decisions. All those attending Synod have an outline of the main points from Conference, or the Conference website can be visited to get fuller information.
Mr Terry Miller from Lincolnshire Chaplaincy Services led our thoughts on climate change, with reference to the document from Conference ‘Hope in God’s Future’.
What happens next? We can become eco-congregations and Green Apostles, people who will act as advisors and helpers on environmental matters. Terry emphasised the value of the Christian Aid materials – Countdown to Copenhagen, Time to make a difference – which are there for each church in the district.
There was a lot of information in a short time, and there are many challenges for us to hear and act upon.
