Training
Opportunities

Dear Colleagues |

An Introduction |
Welcome to the Diocesan CME Programme for 2009-10. One of my hopes when we send out this booklet every year is that those who receive it sit down and ask themselves what will be the elements of their on-going development for the next year or so. Perhaps then this is an opportunity for you to take some time out to think what will I;
- attend / study in the CME programme or beyond
- read for my theological learning
- do about my spiritual life – what about retreats or pilgrimages to suit my needs? www.retreats.org.uk
In the programme this year we have a broad range of events mostly for individuals – but look out for Spirituality and Story on 8/5/10 which is for groups from churches to come to. There is a focus on
disability awareness this year and we have speakers and workshop leaders who we know do a good job returning again; Beatrice Brandon on Healing, Peter Shaw on Leadership Teams and John Truscott on a day on change management in the Church and in the PCC.
Most clergy will now know that sometime in 2010 or early 2011 the new Clergy Terms of Service Measure will come into force and most of us will move to being under what is known as Common Tenure. This has implications for training and development and our ministerial review process. My key response to this has been to recommend that we move to a system of what I am calling reflective practice for all clergy and this is under discussion at the moment. There will be several options on offer for what might be done, but it will be a requirement of the new system. If you have any comments on this I’d be happy to receive them – you might also be interested to read a bit more – and last year I co-authored a Grove book on the subject – it’s P114 in the Pastoral Series. www.grovebooks.co.uk Clergy roles are constantly under review and Robin Greenwood has a new book out which deals with the subject - some of us have already interacted with it. I think its one of his best as it is grounded in field research and summarises a lot of the debate over the last twenty or so years; Parish Priests: For the Sake of the Kingdom (London: SPCK, 2009)
Everyone is invited to our Diocesan conference in October at Swanwick (12th - 14th) and we hope it is going to be an exciting time of exercising our Christian imaginations for the future of the church. We have some excellent speakers in John and Olive Drane and Anne Dyer as well as, I can now confirm the Footprints Theatre Company performing for us on the second evening a newly commissioned play about our local hero, Robin Hood! I hope to see you there.
In the Department for Development we know that our Director, Alan Payne and Urban Officer, David Jones will be retiring by the end of the year. We are grateful for all they have done and we wish them all the best for the future and await whatever changes this may bring about for us
For those new to this annual brochure of learning and training events please read on….
We open a many of our CME events to anyone, believing that the church is a learning community. Where they are for specific groups this is made clear. Do hand the booklet on or ask Catriona for more copies for those who might be interested.
Take time to have a look at what you would like to do, use the enclosed response form in the pre-paid envelope and make a note in your diary!
Where an event is not free (i.e. paid for by the CME budget) this is indicated - also if you are expected to contact somwone else about signing up for it.

FAITH is a verb in the sense
that it is never static and
is always in process. When
it ceases to be - when faith
becomes the unquestioned
acceptance of creed and
dogma - that faith no
longer has meaning for
the living adult........ adult
educators strongly affirm the
importance of LIFELONG
LEARNING.
I propose that people of
faith, similarly, strongly
affirm the importance of
LIFELONG FAITHING.”

20th Comedy Workshop K
Andy Kind, a comedian from Stoke, has designed the course to help Christian ministers, and others involved in public speaking, to convey the Gospel message in a more engaging, relevant fashion. He says, “Christianity is not seen as accessible by the majority of people. If we want the Gospel message to engage with people spiritually, then we must first learn to better engage with them in human terms.” The course will tackle issues such as body language, voice modulation and overall performance skills, and is aimed at building confidence and self-awareness. “Having faith in God can be a challenging affair. But as a public speaker, having faith in yourself is probably even harder.”

4-Week Study Unit: Engaging Culture
Many fresh expressions and pioneer projects
are deeply engaged in relating to gospel and
culture and much Christian ministry has to
respond creatively to cultural issues. This unit
seeks to equip us to make that engagement
and response even more fruitful and insightful
by offering tools of cultural analysis and
theological perspectives to enable constructive
cultural engagement by Christians. We will
consider issues such as power and resistance,
ideology, social difference, the interplay of
material culture and meanings as well as how
these may be theologically understood.
