History of Lea Methodist Church

In 1949 a local preacher, Mr R.H. Williams, felt the call to visit every home in Lea to ascertain what interest there might be for the forming of a Methodist Church in the village. The Rev F O Le Sueur (Superintendent Minister for Gainsborough Circuit) called a meeting in the WI Hall and about 15 people attended. The seed was sown.

A congregation of 10 to 20 people attended for Worship in the WI.Hall regularly. In early 1950, Rev F M Amery (Minister for Lea section), suggested that the time had come to look for more suitable premises.

The Lodge to Lea Hall was empty and classed as unfit for living accommodation and was for sale at L150.

Rev Le Sueur said many difficulties and hard work lay ahead, but with full ministerial support, the members decided to "put the hand to the plough". Prayers were said for God's Blessing to make this venture a reality.

The Lodge was purchased, a porch added to the front and a schoolroom and kitchen to the rear. The total cost of conversion, including furnishings, amounted to L1,900.

The official opening was held on Saturday 10th November 1951, when over 200 people attended. Many generous gifts and donations from every chapel in the circuit meant that in June 1952 it was declared free from debt, just seven months following the official opening, It is impossible in such a short extract to relate all the joys, sorrows and wonderful experiences that have been shared over the past 55 years at this church. More details of the history can be obtained from the Stewards.

Today Lea still has a worshipping congregation of 10 to 20 members and has risen in the last few years to between 25-30 when St Andrews closed and some of their members joined us.  Morning Worship is every Sunday at 10.30 am followed by fellowship with coffee/tea and biscuits. Everyone is most welcome. We are indebted to all those faithful friends who saw the vision and have now passed on and for those who today endeavour to keep the Church and surrounds a witness to God.

"To God Be The Glory."

Margaret Holmes, September 2006.
