PEOPLE & ACTIVITIES

Beaconthorpe is situated on Grimsby Road in the resort of Cleethorpes (Britain in Bloom winner 2007) and has a membership of 60. Many are actively involved in the Church, its' weekday meetings and outreach work. Pastoral care is a core feature of our work in Christ.

Although a fair number of these members are elderly we have not found this to be a disadvantage, on the contrary they have the time and the commitment to carry out their various roles to a very high standard. Aged from 3 upwards, we have a mixture of ages within our congregation and extended family.

Sunday services are at 10.30 am. We offer a Children’s corner with adult help, to support families within services, and a Sunday Club for children and young people if and when numbers are over 4 children.

There is an open invitation to Coffee Fellowship after every service, the value of which is needs no explanation.

In the evenings group services have been established, and are advertised in our weekly notices, the plan, local newspaper and Beacon Magazine. Regular reviews of this system take place under the Ministerial leadership alongside Church representatives.

Although we do not have regular choir practices a small choir leads worship most Sundays from within the congregation. It is augmented for special occasions and the singers join in circuit choirs when these are convened. For worship we are pleased to use Songs of Fellowship books 1 and 2, Hymns & Psalms not forgetting Mission Praise! We can offer some large print versions

Luncheon Club meets on Wednesday, serving lunches to local senior citizens. The fellowship of this community link is much appreciated, and although is it organised by ourselves; it is in association with the Social Services who provide the much needed transport for those who require it.

Women's Own is an open club, available to the community, meeting fortnightly on a Thursday afternoon. This is a devotional meeting that supports rallies in the area and hold a large rally themselves in the Autumn. Some of their meetings are directed toward Network, which is well supported. They have a strong link with the local Reynolds School.

The Wives Group meets fortnightly on a Thursday evening, when a variety of speakers are heard. Members are very loyal and regular in their attendance. Men are invited to attend whenever the evening would be of interest to them.

The Boys Brigade meet on Mondays under the Captain Mr Mike Jackson, starting with Anchor Boys at 6pm followed by the Junior and Senior sections.

The Sunday Club meets during services. The leaders are very supportive, working on a rota basis to cover family support within Church in our Children’s Corner, or take small groups out. Older children and young people are encouraged to attend District MAYC events .

We have thriving House Groups the largest meeting on Monday evening, for prayer and Bible study as well as fellowship.

Fortnightly coffee mornings are hosted throughout the year as part of our mission as well as fund raising events.

BUILDINGS & FINANCE

The buildings are generally in a good condition with the premises much used by both ourselves and outside lettings. They are decorated on a rolling programme, the Main Hall being the most recently decorated, and prior to that the Church. We have the provision of a disabled toilet, provided in conjunction with the care clubs.

Our Church is a Grade II listed building .Being listed means we have to respect conservation constraints, but a visit to our Church interior, will make people realise why it is listed.

The original old Chapel is still on our site. Once used as the Youth Club room, it received some major reconstruction in conjunction with the ‘Clee After School Club’, who regularly use our site. We were planning to have it demolished, as previous plans to rebuild on the site with integral Church rooms and flats, failed to get a partner as a joint project. However, the Clee Club, secured funding through various grants. This smartly renovated building is for their club use, but available to us for meetings should we wish.

In our beautifully wood built Church interior, we have a two manual Cousans pipe organ, designed and built in about 1920. It is serviced annually by Cousans of Leicester It has had a £4000 refurbishment and been highly commended by several professional organists. It is insured for £124,000.

Although one of our Church entrances is stepped, we have 2 other same level entrances to the premises and have taken on board the access guidelines .We have recently renovated the main Church porch and other entrances , as we feel they are an important first impression, in promoting both Church and community mission messages.

LOCALITY & COMMUNITY

We are in a high-density housing area, close to four churches, Christ Church and St Aidan's (C of E), Corpus Christi (R.C.) and the Wesleyan Church of the Nazarene. We have links with most of the neighbouring Churches.

We are on a main bus route and the main road from the A180 / M18 with space for 6 cars on our premise, and additional on street car parking available. The care home, Farringford. is close by.

Our building is used as a resource by nighbouring schools with regard to Religious Education, History and Geography and they also use the Hall and Church for their Christmas Concerts and Harvest Festivals.

We are fortunate to have leased rooms to the Clee Club who provide pre school nursery care and an after school club. The aforementioned renovation to the old Chapel, will enable a more effective club for these, our main hirers.

The premises are extensively used Eg regularly for a Slimming Club, Dance classes , Spangles children’s Theatre Group plus adult group, local Music Festival, Trinity College of Music Exams, & occasionally for Silhouette and Grimsby Philharmonic rehearsals. Children's Parties, Wedding Anniversaries can be booked, but Safeguarding terms are agreed with each. We like to facilitate use by other Church's who do not have the same provision of premise and cater for visiting churches and other organizations wishing to order meals.

Our newsletter is called ‘The Beacon' and is distributed 4 times a year, promoting news, events and a message from our Minister. We also use the local newspaper to advertise our activities alongside 2 notice boards that are soon to be updated. Our slogan is:- BEACONTHORPE- HERE FOR YOU.

HOPES & DREAMS

We aim to continue our community links and hope to promote further links with the other churches in our area. Churches Together has recently taken a higher profile within our Church, with a quiz and other social events, and also provision of food for the local ‘Food Larder’. This is an annual event, alongside our regular provision support, for the Doorstep and YMCA.

We are very happy to experiment in worship and especially enjoy All Age Worship.

We have taken part in a ‘Know and Grow’ exercise, which followed straight after an internal audit done by a Senior Steward. Some of these ideas have been prioritized for action. We also bear in mind any changes that the Circuit Policy may wish to encourage.

We are extremely pleased to welcome the Reverend Michael Townsend as Minister to our group of Churches in the East of a large Circuit, and look forward to our 90th Church Anniversary, and many of us in our hopes and dreams, are looking to a Centenary.

God Bless From

The Congregation and Family of Beaconthorpe Methodist Chuch.
