IMMINGHAM TRINITY MEMBER -MBE FOR A LIFETIME OF SERVICE TO TOWN
Date : 29.12.07

The chairman of the Bench at Grimsby Magistrates' Court has been awarded the MBE in the New Year's Honours List.

The honour follows a lifetime of service to the community in Carol Ranyard's adopted hometown of Immingham.

Mrs Ranyard said: "I am shocked. I am speechless. I can get a new hat.

"We have just celebrated our ruby wedding anniversary and I was 60 this year. This is wonderful."

She has worked at Roxton Medical Practice for almost 30 years and latterly at Pilgrim Primary Care Centre as the information officer.

She has served five generations of some Immingham families.

Mrs Ranyard said: "We have tried to make it more of a community centre than a health centre and involved a host of groups and campaigns to raise money for The Pink Rose Appeal, a carol concert at Christmas, Smoke-Free England and Fire Safety."

She moved to the town in the 1960s after meeting her husband Paul, (62) to whom she has been married for 40 years.

She joined Trinity Young Wives group and then Trinity Ladies Circle with whom she has been associated for 38 years and served as vice-president.

Mrs Ranyard said: "I try to be a friend to everyone. I am always busy and happy to help anybody and do what I can."

Next week she will mark the end of her four years as chairman of the Bench of Grimsby Magistrates' Court, which she has served for 17 years. She will continue as a magistrate.

She said: "I do a lot of youth work which is rewarding. And I enjoyed setting up Prison: Me No Way which we have had at Immingham School for the past eight years."

The project helps pupils to understand the harsh reality of choosing a life of crime.

She added: "I hope Immingham continues to grow in strength and keeps all the activities for young people. It needs a new shopping centre, though shops are closing, which we need to keep open. Not everyone can afford a car to shop elsewhere."

Article from Grimsby Evening Telegraph 29/12/07

What is our church's vision?

Our vision is to refurbish our much-loved church, modernise its facilities and make it more
accessible and welcoming; better able to serve the present and future needs of community
and congregation.

What do we intend to do?

  • Provide a more welcoming entrance area
  • Provide a new toilet for disabled visitors and upgrade the existing toilet accommodation
  • Improve the catering arrangements and provide a landscaped courtyard area for eating
    outdoors in the summer
  • Improve the flexibility of the worship area by providing a level floor with individual seats
  • Improve lighting, decoration and storage arrangements
  • Replace the existing heating system and the 1960's softwood windows

Why are we doing this?

In their existing form, these buildings have served the community of Immingham for thirty years and more. With the passage of time, it has become clear that some aspects of the premises restrict the opportunities that exist for serving the community and for accommodating more varied worship. Some items of long term maintenance have also become necessary.

In conjunction with the local architectural practice, Hodson Design, we have developed a scheme to improve our premises to make them more suitable for present requirements and anticipated future needs.

Past and present

The chapel is one of the few old buildings left in Immingham and we aim to carry out the scheme in a way which will retain and enhance this part of the town's heritage.

The chapel building dates from 1910, the church hall and ancillary premises were added in the 1960's when Trinity Methodist Church was formed from the three separate Methodist churches then in Immingham. What community activities take place in the church?

Well over 500 people in Immingham and the surrounding area have some connection with Trinity by virtue of past or present links with one or more of the organisations which meet on the premises during the week. Many others have been welcomed at Trinity on the occasion of a baptism, wedding or funeral. Whilst worship is central for the regular congregation, much of the activity on church premises takes place during the week and offers a mix of fellowship and social opportunities to many who have no other connection with the church. In a typical week, Trinity receives over 200 visitors.

The building is busy with regular meetings of the following groups, most of which meet on a weekly basis:-

Sunday Club, Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Parents and Toddlers, Inters Youth Club, Sisterhood, Ladies Circle, KIT (Keep In Touch), Men's Meeting, Senior Youth Club, CATS (Carers and Toddlers Sanctuary), Coffee Morning, Senior Citizens Fish & Chip lunch, Junior Club, Choir Rehearsal, Prayer group and Ramblers Club.

The chapel is used for occasional musical concerts as well as for midweek and Sunday services. The church hall also sees concerts, craft fairs, auctions and jumble sales being held, as well as the annual Christmas Fayre.>

It is the venue for the Trinity Pantomime, which has been staged annually for more than thirty years.
This show attracts audiences of 800 to 900 people and is the only regular event of its kind in Immingham.

What will the improvement scheme cost?

The estimated cost is £210,000. With grant aid from the wider Methodist Church, we expect to have to raise around £138,000 locally.

Our church is not endowed with significant capital resources and most of our income is spent on running costs and maintenance. The present membership of Trinity Methodist Church is 108 and the responsibility for raising funds for the improvement scheme rests primarily on these members. A very good start to raising the funds has already been made.

We feel that many other friends may wish to share in our project and we believe that our target will be reached with your help.

When will we begin?

Outline plans have been prepared and fundraising has begun. We expect to receive authorisation to proceed with the scheme when 50% of our local funding target has been reached. We hope to achieve this before January 2002.

How can you help?

If you would like to contribute to this project by making a donation, please send a cheque made payable to Trinity Methodist Church:-

If you are a taxpayer, your giving will be more effective if you make your donation under the Gift Aid scheme. This will enable us to recover the tax, which you have already paid on it. For example, if you give £20.00, Trinity will receive £25.60.

All you have to do is to complete the enclosed Gift Aid declaration and send it together with your gift.

Thank you for your interest. Any gift you are able to make is very much appreciated.

Please feel free to visit us; our magazine, The Beacon, contains details of events at Trinity and occasional reports about the improvement scheme. Copies are available from Immingham Resource Centre, Immingham Library or from Trinity.

Do keep an eye on our church notice board where details of forthcoming events can also be found.

We are a body of people, within the local community; drawn together by the love of God in Christ, to worship, pray and try to follow the teaching of Jesus, by sharing, caring and encouraging others to know and love God, and to use their gifts.
