Bible Reflections 130
The Church exists to help people to grow and
learn as Christians, through mutual support and care.
Colossians 3:14-17
Starter: [In pairs]. Describe a time when you felt really cared for.
Worship: Use verses from Psalm 139 as a starter for a time of silent reflection on how God cares for us.
Invite people to drop one word or phrase into the silence that describes their gratitude to God for his care. Say the Lord's prayer together.
Reading:Colossians 3:14-17
Read aloud, then allow time for everyone to re-read it for themselves along with the commentary and the questions – and reflect alone.
Commentary:
Love is the binding power that holds the Christian body together. The tendency of any group of people sooner or later is to disintegrate. Paul uses the word 'decider' (some versions 'ruler') [v.15]; he takes this from the athletic arena; it is the word used of an umpire who settles things in a dispute. So we are to test our actions and emotions, and our relationships with others against the decisions of Christ. As we depend on Christ and celebrate all that he is so we can be Christ to others in the church community.
Personal Focus Questions:
1. What thoughts about learning and caring come to mind as you read this passage?

|
2. What church activities help you most to deepen your faith in God [v.16]?
3.What do you expect from other people in the church by way of care and support?
Who do you care for and support?

2. Our church's pastoral care would be better if….
3. What plans and targets should we make for developing our life together over the next year?
Review:
In what ways is it helpful to meet together in a small group like this?
Prayer concerns:
Thank God for each other and for all that He has done in your church. In pairs share together what you would like the other person to pray for you. Then as a whole group name before God those in special need at this time.
