Bible Reflections 134

The Church exists to increase awareness of God's
presence and to celebrate God's love.
Colossians 1:15-20

Starter: [In pairs]. Describe a party or celebration you have been to recently. Who /What was it for?

Worship: Sing or listen to a joyful song of praise to Jesus. Celebrate your experience of God and pray that his Spirit will guide your reflection together.

Reading:Colossians 1:15-20
Read aloud, then allow time for everyone to re-read for themselves along with the commentary and the questions – and reflect alone.

Commentary: This passage celebrates the all-inclusive nature of Christ. It describes his relationship to God [v.15], his role in creation [v.16-17], his position in the church [v.18] and his reconciling role in bringing all people back to God [v.19-20]. Christ, therefore, is involved in all aspects of our lives and is worthy of our worship and celebration for all that He is.

Personal Focus Questions:
1. What thoughts about worship come to mind as you read this passage?
What might God be saying to you?

2. What helps you to centre your worship on God?
3. Which of the descriptions of the role of Christ in this passage speaks most powerfully to you?

Share together in threes the results of your individual reflection.

Return together as a group and share any key insights. Now individually complete the two statements below. Share your thoughts and then deal with question 3.

Life Focus Questions:
1. Worship has been really good when…

2. Worship would be better if…

3. What plans and targets should we make for improving our worship over the next year?

Review:
What would you like to do differently next time we meet?

Prayer concerns:
Place a cross at the centre of the group. Read v.20 aloud. You could offer thanksgiving for all that Christ has done and is doing in your lives.
Pray that your friends may come to know God's peace.
