Bible Reflections 158

TOPIC—'That you may believe' —John 20:19-31

Starter:
What aspects of daily life do you have to take on trust? (eg oxygen in the air)

Worship:
Perhaps you could include thanks for the things we take for granted.
Or a personal testimony might be appropriate.

Reading: John 20:19-31.
Read the passage aloud, then give time to re-read it alone along with the Commentary. Then reflect on the questions individually before sharing your thoughts in threes.

Commentary:
Here is not just lack of understanding, but refusal to understand. Jesus agrees to Thomas' wish for proof - to see and touch. But sight is sufficient in the end and his unbelief turns to belief. John then turns his attention to those who will 'see' for themselves and offers evidence for belief in his gospel.(Baranowski adapted)

Personal Reflection:

1. What thoughts come to mind as you read these verses?
What might God be saying to you?

2. Thomas stands for all believers with doubts. What makes you doubt?
    And what makes you believe?

3. The Holy Spirit offers forgiveness; received personally and given to others.
How do you feel when you are forgiven?
What happens if you refuse to forgive someone else?

When you have exhausted your discussions share any insight that you have noted with the whole group and then together consider these questions

Life Focus:

1. What can the 'body of Christ' do to help others profess the faith
     'My Lord and my God'?

2. How can the practice of forgiveness help others believe Jesus is the Son of God?

Review:
Has Easter 2004 prompted us to make 'new beginnings' in living as
'Easter people' in any aspect of our lives?

What steps can we take to maintain 'resurrection life'
within this Small Church Community?
What would you like us to do differently in the group?
How do you think this will help us?

Prayer:
Perhaps a commitment to pray for specific individuals to make the confession 'Jesus is Lord' is one way of living 'resurrection life'.

Close with a time of prayer offering to God people we know who doubt God's love for them.
