Bible Reflections 172

TOPIC—'Trinity' —John 16: 12-15

Starter:
Describe a time when you were so weary that you just could not take anything in.

Worship:
Share together in a time of worship that focuses in turn on the three persons of the Trinity. Try to be creative in your use of visuals and music as well as words.

Reading: John 16: 12-15
Read the passage aloud again, then re-read silently along with the Commentary. Reflect on the personal questions individually before sharing your thoughts in groups of three.

Commentary:
The reading emphasizes the work of the "Spirit of truth" in the Christian community. Jesus is about to leave his disciples and is making provision for their future. Even though he has more to tell them, they cannot understand it before the death/resurrection event. Only in the light of experience of the risen Christ will they be able to comprehend its significance. This insight, given by the "Spirit of truth", will guide them through the centuries in their efforts to grow in understanding. A striking feature of this passage is its stress on the common working of Jesus, his Father and the Spirit of truth. They possess in common; they act in common. (Baranowski)

Personal Reflection:

1. What thoughts come to mind as you read this passage?
What might the Spirit of truth be saying to you?

2. Describe a time when you felt that the Spirit of truth
really helped you understand an issue in your life.

3. How do you deal with the frustration when you appear not to get
the understanding you need from the Spirit?

When you have finished sharing your reflections, offer any personal insights to the group as a whole. Then discuss the following questions together.

Life Focus:
1. In what ways, if any, was the Spirit of truth evident in the election
    campaigns?

2. Do these reflections prompt us to take any action?

Or

Write and send a letter of support to your newly elected MP and highlight one issue that you wish the new government to take action about.

Review :
In what ways was it helpful to move the reflection out into the life of society?

Prayer Concerns:
Join together in prayer now for individuals or issues that have come up during the meeting.

Next Meeting:
Fix date and venue of next meeting.
