Bible Reflections 24

TOPIC—Jesus chooses Philip and Nathanael ---John 1:43-51

STARTER
(In pairs for 5 minutes)
Describe your original home town or village.

WORSHIP
You could focus on the ways God reveals himself.

Reading : John 1:43-51
Read aloud, then allow time for everyone to re-read it for themselves along with the commentary and the questions – and reflect alone.

PERSONAL FOCUS
(Personal reflection on the passage / commentary & questions in silence 10 minutes)

COMMENTARY
The relevance of these paragraphs to our present experience is obvious. Christ the Son of Man continues to offer the summons, “Follow me!” It echoes around the world today through the witnesses to Jesus like Philip. From their experience of Jesus they invite others to ‘Come and see'. It reaches overshadowed people like Andrew; explosive, potential leaders like Peter; withdrawn, struggling characters like Philip; earnest, ingenuous souls like Nathanael; and so to every type of personality. [Milne]

PERSONAL FOCUS QUESTIONS
(Initially just reflect on the question that chooses you. It may help to clarify your thinking to make notes in the spaces provided. This will also give you material to reflect on in the future)

1. What thoughts come to mind as you read this passage? What might God be saying to you?

2. How did you first hear the call of Jesus to follow him? Did you follow?

3. What helped you to believe in Jesus [vv. 45 and 50]?

4. What doubts do you still have about Jesus [v.46]?

PERSONAL FOCUS QUESTIONS
(Discuss in triplets / pray for each other -25 minutes)

LIFE FOCUS
Share together in threes the results of your individual reflection.

Return together as a group and share any insights.

Now together discuss these questions.

1. Are there new ways in which members of the group could invite others to ‘Come and see'?

2. What specific plans can we make

GROUP MEMORY TIME
(Review the actions you agreed to carry out at previous meetings)

REVIEW TIME
Recall plans made in previous weeks. Are they being carried out?

PRAYER CONCERNS
Are there specific people the group would like to pray for that they might hear the call of Jesus?
