Bible Reflections 258

TOPIC 'GOD'S VALUES - BETRAYED OR DENIED'
Readings: Isaiah 50: 4-7
Matthew 26: 14 - Chapter 27v 66

Starter: (In pairs)
Share items seen on T.V. or in the press this week that have moved you to tears.

Worship:
Read Philippians 2 with pause between each verse for reflection.
Following Verse 11 ….."every tongue confess Jesus is Lord….." have a time of praise and adoration

Read The Gospel Passages Aloud.
(as this is a long passage, more than one voice could be used with silent pauses from time to time)

Personal Focus (Personal reflection on the passage, commentary and questions)

Commentary:
The crowds demand that Jesus "be crucified." In this, they side with the religious leaders. Two of Jesus' chosen disciples also side with values opposed to those Jesus taught and lived. Judas betrays the Lord to the authorities; Peter, who was first among the apostles and first to confess Jesus as the Son of the Living God, now denies that same Jesus out of fear for his own life. Jesus, the obedient Son, deliberately chooses to be faithful to God's values even though it led to his death. He died, as he lived, carrying out God's will.

Personal Focus Questions
(Initially just reflect on the verse that chooses you.
It may help to jot some thoughts down in the spaces provided.)

1. Describe a time in your life when a job, task or money took on more importance than you felt it should.

2. Who for you, is the greatest "hero" of the Christian faith and Why?

3. Name a time in your life when Christ's death and resurrection had a special meaning for you.

(When you have reflected alone, share as appropriate in threes)

Life Focus
1. What adjustments to my daily routine and life-style do I need to make in order to accompany
Jesus more faithfully during the dark days of Holy week?

2. Where are the places in our community and wider world where Jesus is weeping in agony?
How can we join Him There?

Review Time
How have we got on with any action we have taken as a S.C.C. Is there any follow-up to attend to?

Prayer Time
Think on the words of the word of the Lord in Isaiah 50 v2
"Why then did I find no-one when I came?
Why, when I called did no-one answer?"
Offer your own prayers acknowledging our failure and receiving afresh forgiveness
