Pastoral Letter

On May the 13th two of or local preachers David Sizer and Michael Holmes are celebrating fifty years of preaching each. This is a tremendous milestone in their lives. We send them our congratulations, best wishes and grateful thanks for their years of service. I hope you will join them for the supper and service held at Broad Street Methodist Church. (Further details in this newsletter)

I want to take this opportunity also to thank all those who quarter by quarter preach and lead worship.  Without their commitment as local preachers or worship leaders making the Circuit preaching plan would be very difficult. However many of our local preachers are over seventy years young.  This is a cause of some concern for the feasibility of preaching and leading worship in say five or ten years time unless there are more people coming forward. We would struggle now without the help of our supernumerary ministers and visiting preachers for who we are thankful.

We are fortunate to have three people in training as local preachers:  Sandy Hunt, Patricia Gooding and Geoff Clear.  We are indebted to their mentors and to Eleanor Smith and Rev John Furniss who tutor them. We meet together each quarter prior to the Local Preachers’ Meeting for study, sharing ideas and monitoring where the three are in their training.

The present Faith and Worship Course is regarded by many as far more rigorous than years ago. There are those who find the level of study and duration off putting when they are considering training.  We should however reach for a high standard in knowledge and the offering of worship. The Lincoln and Grimsby District have been a given permission to pilot a condensed course which uses the resources of Faith and Worship but allows the training to be delivered in the shorter time of fourteen months.  It does this by bringing together the worship portfolio and the assignments from Faith and Worship as the basis for assessment.  The course is supported by seven residential weekends and weekly tutorial groups.  Those who are presently training by this method are finding the course beneficial and interesting especially in having opportunity to meet with their fellow students.

At present we do not have anyone in training to become a Worship Leader, although the training material and tutoring is readily available. As you read this perhaps you might think of someone who God might be calling to be a local preacher or worship leader. Or is God calling You?

With love and prayers to you all. Jenny

Rev Jennifer Park

Christian Faith In Words And Action

CROSSTALKS AT CLOUGH came about as a result of a small group of people who attend local churches meeting and praying together. They aim to explore ways that Christians in South Lincolnshire might work together much more for mutual encouragement and opportunities for evangelism.

It is also hoped that the meetings might bring people together to meet across church and community boundaries, give them the opportunity to hear speakers on a variety of subjects relevant to Christians today, and provide the opportunity to bring friends along who are not yet committed Christians.

Meetings are held on the last Wednesday of each month at 7pm in Gosberton Clough Church Hall, and our next two meetings are:

 ·         March 31st  Gideons International speaker Mr David Hitchcock

·         April 28th  Street Pastors speaker Ms Joy Liddle

We would welcome your participation in the group and also suggestions for possible speakers.

Further information can be obtained from Rev Ian Walters 01775 840 694

or Ms Mary Burton 01775 750 213.

As well as politicians, Churches Together in Britain and Ireland are preparing for the General Election.

A resource pack has been put together with the aim of helping Christians engage with a range of important issues facing our country, however they may decide to vote. The materials do not support a ‘Church’ view or party line.

Faith in Politics: Preparing Churches for the General Election 2010 covers a range of the most important policy issues, such as children & young people, criminal justice, the economy, education, health, migration, poverty and others. For each topic there are sections on subject and background, the main issues, suggested questions to candidates etc.

There are also guidelines for local churches, Churches Together groups or Christian organisations who are thinking of organising a hustings meeting.

Packs and more information can be found at http://www.ctbi.org.uk/

The timetable for the forthcoming sessions of the Encircled in Care Pastoral Course is:

Monday April 12th                      Loss and bereavement

Monday May 10th                      Domestic abuse

Each session starts at 2pm and is held at the Spalding Manse.

We shall be running this course again in the near future, if interested

contact Rev Jennifer Park (telephone 01775 720 145) for more details.

For over 40 years Release International (RI) has been privileged to serve modern-day heroes of faith enduring persecution for the sake of the Lord they love. From the relative comfort of the west, where Christianity is often best accused of being “benign”, it’s easy to forget that the gospel of Jesus Christ remains a threat to many regimes and religious extremists today.

Born out of the personal experience of Pastor Richard Wurmbrand who was tortured for Christ in Romania under Communism, RI organizes legal assistance for prisoners of faith; petitions governments who detail, harass, physically abuse and restrict religious freedom of Christians and gives a range of help to the families of those in prison or who have been killed.

There are millions of our brothers and sisters in Christ suffering horrors today - According to the World Evangelical Alliance over 200 million Christians in at least 60 countries are denied fundamental human rights solely because of their faith. Source www.releaseinternational.org/pages/find-out-more/christian-persecution-faqs

The five core activities of RI are:

†  Showing God’s compassion by providing for the needs of the families of prisoners and martyrs

†   Serving God’s church by enabling them to survive persecution and its effects

†   Sharing God’s love by helping the persecuted church win to Christ those who are opposed to the Gospel.

†   Spreading God’s word by supplying Bibles and literature to meet the need for growth and evangelism

†   Speaking as God’s advocates by being the voice of the martyr and the oppressed.

For anyone interested in supporting or hearing further about the work of RI, there are monthly prayer shields, magazines, and regular e-mail updates of its work. It’s not all doom and gloom – there are amazing miracles too!
